Jesus Lizard in Seattle, July 24th.
On Friday, me and some of the guys from local post hardcore band, Damages, went down to see The Jesus Lizard at the Capitol Hill Block Party. Now, I'm not a big fan, not like the Damages boys, but The Jesus Lizard live shows are legendary, and the Block Party is a very reasonably priced festival. The Lizard were the headliners so we got to see a couple of bands. My favourite was Micachu and the Shapes. Amazing group of very talented young musicians from London playing weird, hipster pop. We also saw Deerhunter, who had some sound problems and whose lead singer, Bradford Cox, looks like he would have been smashed to pieces if he'd stuck around for The Lizard mosh pit, and Built To Spill, who I've seen before, and always sound great, but always look like they'd rather be anywhere else. For the Lizard, me and a couple of the guys went right up front along the security fence. Yow was only on stage a couple of minutes before he jumped the fence and started surfing the crowd. After that it was everyone for themselves. Total, glorious mayhem. Me and the guitar player from Damages, Hieg, stayed at the Moore in downtown Seattle. For lunch on Friday, we both ate the largest burritos of our lives. We felt awful. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We were so full, we didn't have room for beer, and that meant when we woke up on Saturday we were only sore and tired, instead of sore and tired and sick. Anyway, this video doesn't really do justice to the experience of being in the crowd. This is what poets do when they're not contemplating trees.
